Curriculum Intent
“The curriculum is ambitious and effectively sequenced to reflect what pupils already know and can do”. Ofsted, February 2022
At Oxted, our subject curriculum is crafted to inspire ambition and nurture a lifelong love of learning. We want every student to achieve far beyond their starting point. We are committed to ensuring every student grows into a confident, curious, and resilient individual, equipped for a successful and enriching future.
Central to our approach is equitable access to knowledge. Our curriculum is designed to elevate life opportunities for all learners, regardless of background. It is intentionally broad, rigorous, and inclusive, enabling students to explore their interests and pursue meaningful career pathways.
Every subject aligns with national curriculum standards and is shaped by our shared curriculum values. Lessons are thoughtfully sequenced to build knowledge progressively, helping students retain and apply what they learn. Key concepts, vocabulary, and assessments are strategically planned to deepen understanding, correct misconceptions, and build learner confidence.
Our academic offer is both high-quality and balanced, ensuring all students engage with a rich body of knowledge. Adjustments are made only when necessary to support specific learning needs, never to limit potential.
Communication (vocabulary, oracy, reading and writing) is foundational to our curriculum. Each is explicitly taught to enhance comprehension and empower students to express themselves with clarity and confidence. Our communication strategy also ensures students engage with a wide range of texts and perspectives across disciplines.
Our curriculum goes beyond statutory requirements, it enriches students’ lives. It connects closely with our Personal Development and Communication programme, preparing students for their next steps in education, employment, or training.
Shared Curriculum Values
- Equity: Designed explicitly to address disadvantage and implemented in response to the needs of our vulnerable learners
- Knowledge: ‘Powerful knowledge’ that continually engages with complex ‘disciplinary ideas’ and concepts, combining these with rigour and intellectual challenge
- Challenge: Content that is demanding, stretches thinking and deepens understanding of the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve well
- Coherence: Learning that is thoughtfully sequenced to build depth, ensure continuity, support retrieval, and promote progressive, age-appropriate understanding
- Communication: Empowers students to express their ideas clearly, confidently, and effectively across a range of mediums
- Memory: Builds secure long‑term learning and increasingly sophisticated, well‑connected schema through continuous retrieval, practice, and application
