Food Preparation KS3

What will students study in Food Preparation at KS3?

Year 7

Across KS3, students develop essential food skills, practical confidence, and core nutritional knowledge. In Year 7, they begin with hygiene and safety in the food room, understanding hazards, equipment and the Eatwell Guide. Practical work focuses on using the hob, knife skills, rubbing‑in methods and basic oven use, supported by simple food science such as shortening, gelatinisation and raising agents. Students complete practical dishes such as crumble, jam tarts, cake making and stir fry, alongside early nutrition and food allergy awareness.

Year 8

In Year 8, students build on these foundations by exploring heat transfer, cooking methods, food contamination and special diets such as vegetarianism. Practical work becomes more advanced, including bolognese, bread making, chicken pie, gluten‑free cakes, risotto and pizza. Food science deepens through work on raising agents, gelatinisation and sensory analysis. Students also study healthy eating issues, food miles, sustainability, seasonal foods and food presentation. Both years include assessed practical tasks to track progress and build confidence in the kitchen.

Year 9

What are the expectations of my child in Food?

We expect students to follow all instructions given including health and safety rules. Your child must complete all their work on time and remember to bring ingredients and suitable containers to carry their food home in. If your child has any problems with their work they must speak to their subject teacher at least the day before their lesson.

What should my child do if they feels they are struggling in Food?

In the first instance, they should speak to their subject teacher who will help to identify specific areas for improvement in the subject with targeted support.

How can I best support my child in Food?

The best way to provide general support is by discussing their work in the subject and how things are going. Please encourage your child to prepare and cook a range of food and recipes with you at home. When eating out, make a note of the menu, the way the food is served, the environment and they type of service offered.
