Science KS3

What will students study in science at Key Stage 3?

At KS3, students study Biology, Chemistry and Physics in rotation, completing two topics each half term. They build on their KS2 foundations and develop essential scientific skills including practical methods, mathematical techniques, data handling and lab safety

Year 7

  • Biology
    Ecosystems, Genes, Movement Organisms
  • Chemistry
Matter, Metals, Reactions, Atomic structure & bonding
  • Physics
    Electromagnets, Energy, Forces, Waves, Space

Year 8

In Year 8 students will build on their knowledge from Year 7 and will continue to develop their practical science skills.

  • Biology
    Ecosystems, Genes, Movement, Organisms
  • Chemistry
Matter, Metals, Reactions, Atomic structure & bonding
  • Physics
    Electromagnets, Energy, Forces, Waves, Space

Year 9

The Year 9 topics provide a foundation for GCSE Science.

  • Biology
Cell structure & transport, Cell division, Organisation & the digestive system
  • Chemistry
Atoms, elements & compounds, Earth’s atmosphere, The periodic table, Structure & bonding, Crude oil & fuels
  • Physics
Energy resources, Energy transfer by heating, Conservation & dissipation of energy, Waves

What are the expectations of students in Science?

Students are expected to complete all classwork to a good standard and to engage fully in lessons. Homework is set regularly, and students should complete it on time and to the best of their ability. If a student misses a lesson, they are expected to catch up on any work they have missed so their learning remains on track.

What should a student do if they feel they are struggling in Science?

Students should speak to their Science teacher first so that support and guidance can be offered quickly. They can also raise concerns with the relevant head of subject. A range of online resources is available to help, including Kerboodle, BBC Bitesize and Oak National Academy.

How can parents and carers best support a student in Science?

Encourage your child to talk about what they are learning and make connections between science and everyday life. Providing a quiet space and dedicated time for homework and revision can make a significant difference. Asking them to explain key ideas aloud can also help reinforce their understanding and build confidence.
