What will students study at Key Stage 4?

Year 10: Extended cell biology and transport, systems organisation, infection & response, and bioenergetics (photosynthesis/respiration). Required practicals (e.g., enzyme action, microscopy, photosynthesis rates) prioritise method, measurement and evaluation; early ecology introduces field skills.

Year 11: Students study homeostasis & response, genetics and evolution with synoptic ecology. Maths, graphing and practical write‑ups are used to justify conclusions and evaluate limitations across unfamiliar contexts.

What do assessments test?

  • AO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures
  • AO2: Apply knowledge and understanding to new contexts and practical situations
  • AO3: Analyse, interpret and evaluate information and ideas, including in the context of required practicals
