Product Design & Resistant Materials

Intent

This course is built on hands-on and creative projects which will engage and stimulate students to learn the fundamentals of working with different materials such as wood, plastic and metals. Students will follow a portfolio style of learning which will encourage them to reflect and refine their work throughout. Included in the course is the skill of researching different artists, designers, design movements and existing products to further their understanding of construction and inspire them to come up with their own creations.

In KS3, students will be introduced to using a 10-week project that follows the process of research, design, make and evaluation. Each year group will develop their practical and drawing skills.

In KS4, students will complete a 3D design course which, with the use of portfolio-based projects, students will further develop their knowledge in a range of computer design programs, practical skills, drawing skills and the ability to research work to influence them.

Our KS5 course is Product Design and this creative and thought-provoking qualification gives students the practical skills, theoretical knowledge and confidence to succeed in a number of careers. Especially those in the creative industries. They will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on design and technology whilst enjoying opportunities to put their learning into practice by producing prototypes of their choice. Students will gain a real understanding of what it means to be a designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers.
