Geography
Intent
At Oxted, Geography empowers students to understand the world’s complexity and their role within it. Our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity about diverse places, cultures, and environments, while fostering critical thinking about global challenges. We aim for every student to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed decisions and contribute positively to society.
Central to our approach is equitable access to powerful geographical knowledge. We provide a curriculum that is broad, rigorous, and inclusive, enabling all learners—regardless of background—to explore physical and human processes, spatial patterns, and interconnections that shape our planet. Through this, students gain a deep appreciation of sustainability and the impact of human activity on Earth.
Our curriculum is coherently sequenced to build understanding progressively. Key concepts such as place, space, scale, interdependence, and sustainability are revisited and deepened over time. Lessons integrate disciplinary thinking, geographical enquiry, and the use of data, maps, and GIS to develop analytical and evaluative skills. Misconceptions are addressed systematically, and assessments are designed to strengthen retrieval and application of knowledge.
Communication is at the heart of Geography. We explicitly teach geographical vocabulary, oracy, and writing skills so students can articulate ideas clearly and confidently. Students engage with a wide range of texts, case studies, and perspectives, developing the ability to interpret, question, and communicate complex information effectively.
Our curriculum goes beyond statutory requirements by connecting learning to real-world issues and future opportunities. Fieldwork and enrichment activities allow students to experience geography in action, fostering resilience, independence, and a sense of responsibility for the environment. This prepares students for further study, employment, and active citizenship in a rapidly changing world.
