Match Report Y8 Rugby - Saturday 18 October

oxted v wallington Grammar school
final score 5 - 22

On a wet overcast morning Oxted hosted Wallington Grammar School. The visiting team arrived early and were clearly a well organised team who were not lacking in physicality.

Oxted started the brighter of the two teams. The wet conditions resulted in frequent handling errors from both sides, where the ball was spilled in the contact. Both sides strategically opted to keep the ball tight and used a close quarters driving game close to the breakdown. Max McAuliffe and Owen Hulme carried proficiently to get over the gain line and were causing problems for the Wallington defence. After a period of sustained Oxted possession, Wallington took advantage of an Oxted knock on, and ran the ball down field. Wallington’s powerful centre scored to make the score 5-0. Wallington scored again soon after, making the score line 10-0. Matt Hall at prop, was carrying the ball well and exerting his physicality on the opposition forwards by a series of offensive tackles.

Oxted made a quick recovery and worked their way down field, creating several phases of play before scoring down the blind side. Half time score 5-10. The second half saw the return of the drizzle that kept both packs busy in the scrum. Harry Hardisty started to make inroads through excellent lines of running from fly half. Wallington responded with two further tries to end the game, making the final score 22-5.

The score line depicts a Wallington dominated game, but in fact Oxted contested in every aspect of the match. In the end we just lacked the finishing ability of their impressive centres. I was impressed by the determination and organisation of the Oxted team against bigger and well drilled opponents.

Oxted are to face Howard of Effingham in the first round of the Surrey Cup on Monday 21 October away at Leatherhead.
