Match Report Y9 District Rugby Competition - Tuesday 10 September

Y9 District Rugby Competition

Tuesday 10 September

At Oxted School

On Tuesday 10 September Oxted hosted a 15-aside District Rugby Competition.Six teams turned up ready to play on Oxted’s fantastic new rugby pitch.

Oxted's first match was against Warlingham.Having dominated our league in the past, the Oxted team were confident and went into the match with high hopes. Warlingham were quick to retaliate with some excellently organised back play finished off with a try by their electric winger. The rest of the match seemed to follow this format although there were some heroic tackles from John Harbour and Ross Muddell around the scrum. Oxted were unable to contain Warlingham’s very organised backs, and struggled to maintain possession in contact. The game ended 19-0 to Warlingham.

Oxted’s second match in the pool was against an unpredictable de Stafford side. The match started well with Oxted placing huge amounts of pressure on de Stafford’s ball carriers; this lead to a turn over. From the turn over James Coleman strides over to score a try. The try was then followed by an excellent passage of play leading to Max Janaway driving over from 5 metres out to score in the corner. With increased confidence Oxted started the second half with some excellent forward play from Matt Hall, Tom Read and Tom Walsh. However after scrappy play between the Oxted back 3, Oxted lost the ball on the ground for de Stafford to scoop up and score a try. Oxted feeling the pressure buckled again with a string of mistakes, de Stafford ran the length of the pitch only to be stopped with a heroic tackle by James Coleman. While Oxted congratulated James on his tackle de Stafford continued play scoring again in the corner. The match ended 12-12, a disappointing loss for Oxted but plenty of lessons taken from this encounter.

The runners up final was against a very competitive Oakwood side. Oxted moved up a gear and started to attack with real purpose. Max Janaway filling in at 10 did well to move the ball wide using James Coker and Luke Montieth to attack down the wings. Altogether Oxted looked the stronger outfit defensively putting Oakwood under some real pressure while organising some excellent running lines through the backs. The first try came after a phase of support play from Oxted giving Henry Porter a try in the corner. The next try came from a line break by James Colman. Oakwood finished the game with useful attacking play but the final whistle ended their chances.

Oxted restored pride with an excellent win at the end taking them into 3rd place. However it was clear, with nobody from Year 9 at training on Monday, that this tournament would be a valuable shock to the system.  I hope to see everybody in the team at training next week.
