Oxted Team:
George Walker, Matt Gardiner, Ollie Sweeney, Xav Copp, Felix Sarup, Owen Hulme, Rhys Clutterbuck, Oli Evans, Sam Carlisle, Ben Johnson, Sam Regan, Max McAuliffe (Captain), Michael Dickinson, Charlie Watkins, Harry Hardisty

Oxted started their first game of the season, and the first round of the Surrey County Cup against a team of pedigree, in the form of Winston Churchill School.

Oxted started the brighter of the two sides, some strong lines of running created a ruck on the opposition 5m line and Sammy Carlisle dummied from the base and darted over for a close range try, which he duly converted. Winston Churchill forced a turnover from the restart and some powerful probing attacks from their back line forced a try to make the score 7-5 to Oxted. The game was in the balance with all facets of the game evenly contested. Tom Read (Year 11 student) demonstrated his extensive rugby knowledge in a fine display of refereeing.

Oxted were defending stoutly under great duress, with Oli Evans repelling wave after wave of Churchill attacks and two excellent try saving tackles from Charlie Watkins and George Walker. Patience and great work at the breakdown by George Walker, Felix Sarup and Matt Gardiner and Rhys Clutterbuck saw Oxted recycle the ball over several phases, and eventually was passed down the line for No. 8 Owen Hulme to stride over the line for a try just before the half time whistle.

Half time score 12-5 to Oxted

The second half saw Oxted climb into ascendency and Churchill lose their discipline. Oxted progressed into the oppositions 22m area, and a line out saw the ball passed to fly half Ben Johnson who accelerated over the gain line and off loaded to Sam Regan whose line saw him run clear of the defenders for a converted try. With the score line at 17-5 Churchill again responded with renewed tenacity and strong support running off their fly half forced their hooker through a gap and a try quickly ensued, 17-12.

Oxted re-gathered and some excellent defensive line speed saw Oxted force Churchill into several turnovers and with Ben Johnson orchestrating the back line with both Sam Regan and Captain Max McAuliffe making yards, and supported by Charlie Watkins and Harry Hardisty saw Oxted penetrate the Churchill line. Quick recycling of the ball saw Olly Sweeney power over after an effective pick and go. Oxted now pushed on and another wave of attack saw Rhys Clutterbuck outpace the cover defence to score the final try of the game.

An excellent and convincing win against some imposing opposition.

Final Score – 31-17 to Oxted.

Oxted now progress through to the next round of the Surrey Cup.

Man of the Match – George Walker

Special thanks to Tom Read for an excellent job refereeing
