Another Sporting Success at Oxted School

I have been playing hockey since I was 7 years old and have played for Surrey since the age of 13.   Ultimately this season I was very pleased to be selected for the England U16 squad.

The process started in January 2014 when the county season begins. Playing County hockey has been a highlight of mine and I was chosen to captain the Surrey U15 team and was later honored to be chosen as player of the season.  After the County matches finished there were a series of trials resulting in 18 players being selected to play for South of England.

In October 2014 I attended the ‘Futures Cup’, representing the South, which is a tournament where all four regions play each other. The tournament is a chance for the England U16 coaches to pick out their top 40 players who were invited to do further trials with the chance of getting a spot in the national team. The Futures Cup was an opportunity to experience what playing hockey at a high level is like.

After the Futures Cup, I was delighted to be selected for further training and assessment. This involved a grueling 8 hours on the pitch as well as fitness tests. In February 2015 the team was finally selected and I was lucky enough to be a part of the 26 strong England U16 hockey squad. I was so pleased to have got in especially after having spent over a year trialing to get my place in the squad. Now, as part of the national team, we train regularly and will play matches against Holland, Ireland, Scotland, Belgium in preparation for the big five nations tournament taking place in July.

All of this has been made possible by the encouragement of friends, family and teachers. I would like to thank Oxted Hockey Club who have coached and supported me from the beginning, without whom, no of this would have been possible.
