Press Release from the Governors of Oxted School

Foundation Status Accepted

The Governors of Oxted School have given careful consideration to the views of 255 respondents on their proposal for Foundation Status.  186 of over 3,500 parents and carers replied, of whom, 49 did not state a view, 53 were supportive of the proposal and 84 raised concerns.

Having taken into account all responses from stakeholders including those raised during the small group consultations, the Governing Body have announced their decision to proceed to Foundation Status.

Brian Taylor, Chair of Governors confirmed “we are confident this change in status will benefit the education of the students at the School, which is our foremost concern as Governors”.

The Governors also announced the start of the second stage of their plans for the future of Oxted School, a consultation process for becoming an Academy within The Howard Partnership Trust (THPT), a Multi-Academy Trust.

Janet Conneely, Governor and parent, says “full information on the Academy consultation is available on the School’s website and Governors are keen to involve parents and the local community in this process. Current students are already benefitting from collaborative working with THPT, and Oxted School has seen a dramatic rise in exam results against a national downward trend.  The School has surveyed the staff and the Governors are reassured to have their support with over 90% of staff who responded in favour of the planned conversion”.

Adrian Bennett, the Head of Sixth Form at the School says “as one of the longest serving members of staff I have found the benefits of collaborative working with THPT to be exciting and rewarding.  We have seen new ideas and approaches which, combined with our students’ potential and the already strong commitment of our dedicated teaching staff, have resulted in significant and marked improvements at Oxted School.  The collaboration hasn’t just been one way.  THPT like the way we track our student progress, the importance we attach to our Junior Leadership Team of Head Boy and Head Girl and the benefits of our Year 8 camp.  In my experience, we have never had a clearer drive to become an ‘outstanding’ school – a realistic ambition within the Multi-Academy Trust of THPT”.

In an email to the School, a parent and local resident thanked Governors for their feedback stating “The information that Governors have provided has answered my questions.  I am now confident that a move to Foundation and Academy Status is in the best interests of the School and am happy to support these plans”.

In another message, an Oxted mum said “We only have to talk to our daughters and look at their reports to see how happy and thriving they are, both academically and personally - a credit to the teachers and the Leadership Team. I believe they will be the best they can be at Oxted School, and we hope it becomes an ‘outstanding’ school at the heart of our community for generations to come. I support the Governors’ proposals”.
