On a cold but frost free Saturday morning Oxted faced their final rugby game of 2014. The opposition were Tiffin Grammar School, who last year convincingly beat us 55-5 away from home, so the match would be an excellent indicator as to the progress Oxted have made.

From the offset Tiffin showed they were a very well organised and well drilled unit, with an effective pack and excellent running backs. Tiffin scored early through exploiting an overlap in the midfield with smooth interplay between their backs. Wave after wave of Tiffin attacks were repelled by a stout Oxted defence marshalled by Ben Johnson at fly half. Eventually the dam broke and Tiffin went over for their second try which was converted to make the half time score 12-0.

The second half saw Owen Hulme be more direct from No 8 and carry the ball into the heart of the Tiffin defence. But Oxted still failed to put a series of phases together, before an unforced error would be made. The pitch was cutting up badly and both sides were knocking on frequently, meaning that the game was never going to be free flowing. Oxted continued to defend with vigour, especially Harry Hardisty whose tackling throughout was very impressive. However, in attack we could not seem to retain the ball for long enough to create any attacking opportunities.

Eventually Owen Hulme forced a turnover with a big defensive hit at the side of a ruck to release George Walker on a powerful run before he was hauled down. The ball at the ensuing ruck was secured and Sammy Carlisle fed a short pass to Rhys Clutterbuck who made an incisive break adjacent to the ruck before crossing for Oxted’s first and only try of the game.

After defending for the majority of the game, some tired Oxted tackles led to a further 2 tries for Tiffin to make the final score 5-26 to Tiffin.

Oxted showed that they can endure sustained opposition pressure, and demonstrated an excellent defence. We just to need to focus on securing good, useable ball and being more direct when we are in position.

Man of the Match – Harry Hardisty for a fantastic tackling display.
