Year 11 Rugby Surrey Bowl Winners

On Thursday 27 March Oxted played Shirley College in the final of the Surrey Bowl.

After spending 30-45 minutes of the warm up, speculating on the size and age of Shirley’s bearded second 4 and 6, the match was upon us. The first exchange was not a positive one, when after letting one of Shirley’s giants start up a rolling maul, then decided to let him skip over the line to open up the scoring, the referee commented after the game he thought at this point Oxted  may be in for an “absolute thrashing” from the large physical Shirley side.  How wrong he was!

Shirley were a team of big strong one up runners, but as the match continued they made very little impact.  Oxted’s tackling and intensity was on point, and a turnover led to Oxted’s first try.  This proceeded to open the flood gates with Oxted running in try after try; eventually ending up 56-5 winners.

All the players did their job and Oxted scored some truly spectacular individual and team tries, combining excellent handling with some very affective running lines. Michael Bowyer led the way as captain and made some big hits that put the opposition off running again. Overall players of the match were Sean Wenham and Reece Nicholson both playing with great determination to break the defensive line and put Shirley on the back foot.

I’m very proud of how this age group has progressed over their time here at Oxted; I look forward to seeing a lot of them playing sixth form rugby next year.
