Match Report - Y8 Rugby Sevens Tournament

Year 8 Rugby at the Surrey Schools Rugby SEVENS Tournament

The Year 8 team travelled to Trinity School in Croydon for the annual Surrey Sevens competition. Being placed into Pool B alongside Riddlesdown, Howard of Effingham, Wimbledon College and Reeds School meant there would be no easy games.

Our first game against Riddlesdown saw that our defence was strong but we lacked attacking flair. Two tries from Sam Regan saw us draw the game 12-12.  The next game we faced Wimbledon College who had pace and size in abundance, who overpowered us with ease. Reeds were our next opponents and we played some excellent 7s style of rugby for a comfortable win. The final opponents were the team that knocked Oxted out of the Surrey Cup, and we knew they are a formidable outfit. With a game plan to let Rhys Clutterbuck mark their dominant runner saw Oxted defend with vigour and Rhys did a fantastic job tackling superbly. Howard eventually scored 3 tries winning the game 17-0.

Leaving Oxted in 4th place in the pool, we progressed through to the Bowl competition where we faced Reigate Grammar School in the quarter finals. Oxted played their best rugby in this game, with tries from Rhys Clutterbuck (x 2) and Tom Corbett to secure the win 19-14.

In the semi-final we faced a well drilled and well organised Emmanuel team who eventually just edged the win to progress to the final.

On the whole a learning curve, the tournament always attracts the strongest independent schools with the likes of Whitgift, Trinity, RGC Guildford, Tiffin, City of London Freemans School so we were in good company.

Man of the Tournament: Max McAuliffe
